OVH is one of the cheapest VPS and dedicated server provider in the world. They makes affordable and reliable VPS solutions for web hosting and for developers starting from low $2.99/mo. I hope as of now we won’t get another VPS hosting less than the $2.99. And the best part of OVH is its comes with free Anti DDoS protection with all their VPS and dedicated server plans. OVH VPS hosting comes with a bunch of linux distributions, Windows servers and Application preinstalled Linux distributons as well. Here is a small OVH VPS review.
Both Classic and Cloud having 4 plans each which having different hardwares like vCPU, RAM, HDD, etc. And OVH really missing the SSD RAID hard disks. All their VPS storage disks are Spinning hard disks in RAID 10 redundancy environment.
OVH Classic VPS are powered with 64bit Open VZ (Open Virtuozzo) technology for creating the Virtual Private servers. As per OVH VPS running in OVH VPS Classic will take 10 minutes to reboot and so the guaranteed uptime (SLA) is 99.98%. But in the VPS Cloud, OVH use VMware vSphere virtualization technology in creating the VPS VMs. OVH guarantees less than 5min reboot in case of a hardware failure and a 99.99% uptime SLA with cloud VPS.
You will get a dedicated static IP address for your VPS hosting (Both classic and cloud) and if you need more ip address, you can buy ip addresses with extra cost upto 15 nos. You can configure fail over with multiple IP addresses in your VPS cloud. Only Beauharnois, Canada based IP address you get with a Classic VPS plan. But with OVH VPS Cloud you can get US or Canadian IP addresses, and choice is yours. By default all the ports are open in your VPS , and you can configure network and firewall with a free web based interface from OVH.
For backup it costs extra from you, You can choose 200GB extra FTP space for $6.99/mo, or a 1 Snapshot option for $6.99/mo or an automatic backup option with Veeam at extra cost dollars 13.99 a month
Network bandwidth is same for both Classic and Cloud VPS hostings. You will get 100mbps bandwidth upto 10,000GB data transfer monthly. After initial 10,000 GB the bandwidth will reduce to 1mbps. i don’t see any bandwidth plan upgrading options from OVH’s VPS plans.
Only Linux flavoured operatings are available with the VPS classic plan. You can select a wide variety of Linux distros with or without custom applications preinstalled. Debian, CentOS, Ubuntu, WordPress(for your WordPress hosting), LAMP, Plesk, cPanel, Ruby, Drupal, blah blah blah.. For some control panels like cPanel, Plesk, etc you have to pay license fee (per month) for the control panel usage.
If you need a Windows Server operating system in your VPS, then you should start with OVH VPS Cloud platform. But if you choose for Windows server in the OVH Cloud VPS (Windows server 2008, 2008 R2, 2012 R2 Standard/Web editions available for you) You will get a licensed copy of Windows server along with Cloud VPS (Only OVH Cloud VPS).
“Windows License is FREE” with Windows preinstalled VPS
As you can see the OVH VPS Classic starts with $2.99 a month for the 1 vCPU, 1GB, 10GB HDD setup and you can expand your resources upto 4vCPU, 8GB RAM and 100GB HDD within the VPS Classic hosting. The OVH Cloud VPS hosting starts from $14.99 for 2vCores, 2GB RAM and 25GB HDD RAID 10 Storage to $89.99 for the high end hardware 8 vCore 16Gb RAM and 200GB RAID 10 Storage within the Cloud VPS category. Easy one click hardware upgrade option are available within the VPS classic or VPS cloud.

Nice review. OVH is really cheap and best cloud VPS. But They missing SSD badly.
But my question is OVH or Linode ?
@Mahee,
If you have a tight budget go for OVH, own a vps for $2.99, with added free DDoS + good hardware + large free bandwidth
Things for considering Linode: reliable service, good market share, real cloud, support, easy UI.
Nice review.
Ah really ?!! OVH is the worst VPS, you said Cheap ? yes, but be wary for the hours of down and days of waiting to get support, and this is not the vps problem it’s their network infrastructure !
i’m talking about their main data center in europe (Paris) i do not know about the new one in north america
Im planning to get OVH vps plan. Im from Malaysia. Any idea what’s the speed over here? I chose Linux Plesk. Should i still need to purchase the license for it?
I switched from digitalocean to ovh simply because of $2.99 and ddos protection. My site was down may be 3 times over the pass year. It didn’t take long to recover. I don’t like that fact that that $2.99 doesn’t include snapshotting your server which digital ocean offers, but $2.99 is hard to beat. I’ve contacted their support for the different time the site is down, I can actually talk to real speaking person every single time w/o problem.
This post should be updated. OVH has already changed to use OpenStack KVM, and the price for Cloud VPS are dropped.
